Portland Eatery Celebrates Indian Holiday
Published 03/04/2010
(Portland, Oregon) - Frivolity is in the air during Holi, one of the most popular Hindu festivals celebrated both in India and around the world. As a celebration of the beginning of spring and the end to the winter gloom, Holi is often associated with the throwing of colored water and powder, lighting of bonfires and dancing and celebrating with wild abandon. In Portland, East India Co. Grill & Bar will show its “colors” with a colorful spread of spring-inspired dishes in a special Holi menu for $20 per person. The menu includes a selection of Tandoori grilled vegetables like broccoli, green & red peppers and scalltions marinated and grilled; colorful saffron rice; radish and roasted beet salad; fresh spinach and green chilies and carrot halwa with shredded carrots in milk and saffron-infused sugar. The special Holi menu will be available from Saturday, February 27th through Saturday, March 6th. For reservations, please call 503-227-8815.
“As one of our major Hindu festivals, Holi originated as the celebration of good over evil,” said culinary director Pradeep Chandrana. “We love to introduce our traditions to our non-Indian customers as well and offer new flavor combinations – and of course, colorful dishes.”
The Holi menu is $20 per person, going until March 6. It includes: Tandoori grilled vegetables, Saag corn (spinach and corn), Methi Aloo (potatoes and fenugreek), Kodi Pulusu (pot roasted chicken, coconut, home made yogurt), Dahi Bhalla (soft lentil donuts in spiced yogurt), Saffron Basmati Rice and naan bread. There is also dessert.
East India Co. Grill & Bar features classic Indian cuisine from northern and western India prepared with a contemporary flair. Culinary Director Pradeep Chandrana remains true to the classic Indian recipes and offers a dinner menu as varied as kebabs grilled over hard wood charcoal, Biryani, an assortment of entrees from Goan Jhinge ka Salan (Goan Shrimp Curry) to Begam Bahar Ratan (Scallops & Asparagus) and a variety of breads and sides. With a warm and contemporary interior design, East India Co. pays attention to details – from the jeweled napkin rings to the sepia images of historic India and the small culinary touches that give the cuisine its authentic touch. East India Co. welcomes the after work imbibers with a long, narrow bar that draws attention to the list of tropical cocktails and Indian beer and a popular happy hour from 5-7 p.m. A $20 prix fixe menu is available from Monday to Saturday from 5 p.m. to close.
