Holiday Charities Abound in Portland, Oregon Coast

Overleaf Lodge in Yachats

(Portland, Oregon) – Sometimes, you simply have to do the right thing.

The holidays bring that out in people, especially many businesses in Oregon. One of them in the Portland area is helping out a counseling center devoted to helping families who have had a child pass away, while a few businesses on the coast are assisting their local foodshare entities.

Canyon Grille on SW Canyon Road in Beaverton is entering the world of selling Christmas trees for a cause, in what it calls “Nobles for a Noble Cause.” Proceeds from the sales of these trees will go to the Dougy Center, which helps grieving families who have lost a child. The center, now temporarily located on NE Glisan, was the victim of an arson that burned down the facility’s main home in SE Portland this past summer.

Despite the loss of the building, the Dougy Center has not missed a single support group meeting.

Canyon Grille owner Opal Lawson also had a child pass away and is a firm believer in the center’s work. The trees are crammed into a small space just outside the tiny eatery, which sits on the border between Portland and Beaverton. Lawson has done everything she could to make room - a testament to her belief in the Dougy Center.

With each tree purchase, customers also get a $10 gift certificate for food at the Canyon Grille.

Trees vary in size and price, but many are around eight feet tall for $35. Some of the smaller ones go for $15, while a 12-foot tree goes for around $80.

Canyon Grille is at 8825 SW Canyon Rd, Portland, Oregon. It sits across the street from many of the big Beaverton car dealerships, in the West Slop neighborhood. 503-292-5131.

The Overleaf Lodge and the Fireside Motel in Yachats, on the central Oregon coast, are opening their hearts not just for the holiday but well into the next year. Both gorgeous properties overlook the dramatic surf of the area, and both will give you 20 percent off your room for canned food that is then given to the Lincoln County Foodshare. In fact, bring a can of food for each night of your stay and it’ll get you 20 percent off.

Canned meats and vegetables are preferred.  Not valid during the following dates: Nov. 26, Dec. 24-31, or Feb. 14, 2010.

If you also book an hour-long spa service at their stunning spa, along with the cans of food, you can get a total of 25 percent off your room rate.
