Beer, Wine Competition on Tap for Oregon State Fair

(Salem, Oregon) – Oregon is home to some of the more prominent makers of wine and beer in the United States, and the upcoming Oregon State Fair would like to show that off from the ground level. Oregon officials are putting out the called to state winemakers and home brewers to compete for top honors at the Oregon State Fair's Amateur Wine Competition and Homebrew Beer Competition this summer.

Registration for the Amateur Wine Competition is open through 4 p.m. Friday, July 12. Registration for the Homebrew Beer Competition is open through 5 p.m. Friday, August 2.

The Oregon State Fair's Amateur Wine Competition is sponsored by Chemeketa Community College's Northwest Wine Studies Center, and it welcomes with open arms those aspiring winemakers from across Oregon to this high-profile competition.

Judges will award blue, red, and white ribbons within each classification on August 9-10. Blue ribbon winners will receive a ticket to Pairings! A Celebration of Oregon Wine, Cuisine & Music, set from 4 to 9 p.m. opening night of Fair on August 23. This event will feature paired hors d'oeuvres and wines from chefs and wineries across Oregon, along with music by The Libertine Belles and Pepe and the Bottle Blondes. Tickets are $35 and include all food and wine, plus fair admission. At this event, the winners from each category of the wine competition will be announced and presented as Amateur Best of Show.

Also returning this year is the popular Homebrew Beer Competition, which brought in more than 30 entries at the 2012 fair. The Homebrew "Best of Show" judging and awards presentation will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 24 during the FREE Classic Cars, Blues, Brews & BBQ Festival. The festival includes local blues talent Ty Curtis and Curtis Salgado.

Entries are due by 5 p.m. August 2, 2013, at the following locations:
Bend: The Brew Shop in Bend, Oregon; Corvallis Brewing Supply in Corvallis; Eugene's Falling Sky Fermentation Supply Shop; Hillsboro: Brew Brothers; FH Steinbarts in Portland, Oregon. In southern Oregon, they can be found at Roseburg's Dogbarrel Brewery and Home Brew Supplies. In Salem, they are at the Oregon State Fairgrounds.

The American Homebrewers Association (AHA) and the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) sanction the 2013 competition.

Registration for both competitions is open to all amateur winemaking and brewing enthusiasts 21 years or older.(Any age is allowed for the soft drink category of the Homebrew contest.) Winning entries will be on display during fair week in the Floral Building in Hart of the Garden.

The 2013 Oregon State Fair will take place in Salem August 23 through September 2 in Salem.
